The southwestern college architecture program is designed to provide students with the creative problem solving skills and critical thinking processes necessary to successfully complete upper division baccalaureate work leading to the professional bachelor of architecture degree. The southwestern college architecture club offers students of any major the opportunity to learn of multiple california transfer institutions throughout the academic year. we do so by hosting workshops, lectures, and organizing university tours open to every current swc student. Southwestern has offered a minor in architecture and design since 1985, with prof. thomas howe (art historian, archaeologist, design teacher) providing lecture courses in architectural history and studios introductory architectural design, and prof. ron geibel (ceramist) offering courses in design, with projects in industrial and landscape design. Three architecture studios introduce students to basics of programmatic design on a specific site, and basics of three dimensional drawing and thinking (studio i), design to modern structures (e.g. steel frame airport design project, studio iii), and most unusually, historical design (designing a neoclassical assembly hall or gothic cathedral, with full consideration of actual structure, studio iii).
